Oikoi is a private place where you share within your own circle: family, friends, the people who were there. No recommendations, no discovery, no ads, no public likes. The value isn’t in daily use, but in the archive that builds up over the years.
Most platforms are built to make you come back. Oikoi is built to keep something. You decide what you share and with whom; the system never pushes. Hosted in Europe, without American services for your archive, and you can always leave with all your material. If you turn on push notifications, Apple delivers the short notification, never with content.
Your circle is the sum of your connections: mutual, no followers. A connection starts with an invitation, or by looking someone up with an email address you already have. We never confirm whether someone has an account.
Talk with one or more residents, even outside your own circle; only people with an Oikoi account can take part. You share photos, audio, files, polls and, if you choose to, your location. What you share is stored encrypted on a European server instead of on your phone, so it doesn’t fill up. What you put in a conversation only reaches your circle if you choose that.
You post photos or text, by default only for your own circle. Location data and other metadata are removed on upload. Questions and contributions go only to the person who posted: no audience, no counters.
A post can also be just for yourself. The diary appears nowhere in the circle, nobody can write anything on it, and it is simply part of your export. Sharing later is always possible, with one deliberate confirmation.
You can attach one audio clip to a post: a story behind the series, or the voice of someone in it. Record in the browser or upload, up to ten minutes. Nothing plays by itself, and the system doesn't listen in: no transcription, no voice recognition.
Per connection you choose whether to serve as a bridge. Then a post with “extended” reach appears to that person as a reference: name and avatar, no content. Whoever wants to see it requests a connection — the sender decides.
No public profile, no shareable links, no search engine. Every photo is only delivered after checking whether you may see it. There are no streaks and no counters tugging at you. Notifications are sparing, never contain content, and you mute them per conversation.
You can export everything at any time: original photos, texts and your own questions and contributions, in folders by year, without database codes. If you stop paying, everything stays visible to those who already saw it; only posting stops.
European hosting with European ownership, no subprocessors outside the EU for your archive (only the delivery of push notifications, if you turn them on, goes via Apple in Ireland), and on takeover or termination at least ninety days and a full export for everyone.
You pay for storage space per year, and for prints and photo books per order. Viewing is always free; whoever posts a lot pays more, and nobody carries someone else’s storage. A hard, visible quota — no fair-use policy, no ads, no features behind a paywall.
Oikoi is a shared cloud and your house grows with its residents: if you pay yourself, you get 1 GB extra from the first paying connection on, for every paying resident in your own circle. If twelve people in your circle chip in, you have 13 GB for € 12 a year: 1 GB of your own plus 12 GB from your circle. That way everyone with such a circle has 13 GB, and we carry it together.
